The latest additions to the chook population are French Wheaten Marans.
Not my birds but this is what they look like!
They lay eggs like these:

Even with one rooster probably being infertile everything that  didn't candle clear has hatched. Including 2 eggs that were in the fridge (they just hatched a day or so later!)

Well they're hatching!

Well the blue buff girl is still alive so maybe there is hope!

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Sadly a few of the girls have met with unhappy ends.

At least 2 maybe 3 of the hens are no more.
The barred hen got out early on Sunday and became a dog's breakfast.
One of the buff Colombian pullets didn't survive being played with by one of the pups and the blue buff girl was played with but was still alive last time I looked. If she is still in the land of the living tomorrow maybe I might allow a bit of quiet optimism.

(update 12/9/12
Still alive and looking a bit brighter!)

Fabio moved to a new place yesterday.
It looks like Fabio is well on the way to recovery. After the injury on May18th he was unable to walk so after a period wearing a splint that prevented him moving his legs he gradually became stronger. By the second weekend in July he was able to walk again. On July 28th he was moved into a small pen with a hen of his own!

Chooks and maremmas seem to go together quite nicely!

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Fabio arrived here from Tasmania on 11/05/2012 and injured himself on 18/05/2012 and was unable to walk. By keeping him confined initially the by a bit of 'chook' physio he has improved to the point that he can now walk and stand.

The one at the back is BJ.

I do like this colour!
 Some pictures from Europe!
The corresponding female!
Another colour (not one we have in Australia as far as I know.)

My birds
Chow Mein and the buff hen are now in the general pen!

Heckle is here and he's bigger than I expected. A rare colour so I'll overlook that his body type looks more sussex than brahma on first impression.
